Three Day Weekend, School Tours/Kinder Assessments, and MORE!

Observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday – There is no school on Monday, January 16, in remembrance of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

2023 California Distinguished School – Phoebe Hearst Elementary has been recognized as a 2023 California Distinguished School for achieving exceptional student performance.

New Student Tours – Tours for potential incoming kindergartners and new students are the next three Tuesdays from 9 – 10am. Current families should not sign up for the tours.

Kindergarten Assessments – Kindergarten assessments will take place on Saturday, January 25th. More information to come soon.

Spelling Bee – The final 18 will battle it out for spelling domination on February 27 at 8:30 in the cafeteria.

Open Enrollment – The window for open enrollment is February 1-15. It is important not to miss this window if you are hoping to enroll at Phoebe Hearst or any other open enrollment school. Having a sibling currently enrolled does NOT guarantee a spot. For more information about open enrollment, please visit the district open enrollment page.

New Breakfast Times – Currently, breakfast is served from 7:30 – 8:00 am. With breakfast overlapping with the time school begins, students are not getting to class on time. To ensure that students are in class and learning at the start of the school day, effective Tuesday, January 17 th, breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 7:55 am.

Neighborhood Parking – A friendly reminder to please show respect for our neighbors when parking in the neighborhood for arrival and dismissal. I have received a number of complaints asking our families to not block residential driveways, double park which prevents the flow of traffic, and not park on top of leaf piles. Also, parking illegally on corners creates a blind spot for when our students are trying to cross the street. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Covid Tests – Teachers were given Covid tests to pass out to students for the 3 – day weekend. Please read these flyers for  more information and instructions

Happy New Year Dragons!

Dear Phoebe Hearst Families and Friends,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful, restful, and eventful winter break. As you prepare to return to school Monday, here are a few quick announcements and reminders.

Masking Update: Because Sacramento County has reentered the “medium” COIVD-19 community level, the district is not imposing an indoor mask requirement at this time. While masks are not required, they remain highly recommended. Please read the email to view a message from the district with more information.

Rain: Beginning Monday morning, a storm is expected to bring over an inch of rain and 30 mph winds to Sacramento. The forecast also includes the threat of localized flooding on Tuesday with a flood watch continuing through Wednesday. Please monitor the warnings and take necessary precautions. BE SAFE!

Morning Announcements: Reminder about the changes to morning announcements. If you did not yet read, please review the  December 23rd announcement, linked to in the email. Starting Monday, January 9, 2023 (weather pending) full announcements will occur every Monday and Friday. The pledge will continue to be recited together on the blacktop at the start of school each day. An early bell will ring at 7:55 am each day to remind the students to line up.

PTO General Meeting: There will be a PTO meeting on campus on Wednesday, January 11th, beginning at 6pm. The district GATE coordinator, Kari Lofing, will be in attendance to answer any questions about GATE testing and placement.

Golden Dragons: On Friday, January 13th we’ll honor our Golden Dragon winners for December who exhibited being a humanitarian.

Once again, welcome back to school and I am looking forward to seeing your smiling faces!!!

Boo-Grams
Student Council will sell Boo Grams on 10/25 and 10/26 before school and during lunch. On 10/27 Boo Grams will be sold before school only. They are $.50 each!

What are Boo-Grams? A Boo-Gram is a card that students or families can send to other students, teachers, staff, or themselves for $.50 each. A brief message can be written on it. It can also be anonymous. It’s very similar to a Valentine. They will be delivered to the classrooms at the end of the week.

Flag Football
Our flag football team won their first game Wednesday against Caleb Greenwood 14-6.
Congrats to Coach O and the team! The next game is Wednesday, October 19th against Washington. All games start at 4pm and are played at Will C. Wood Middle School.

The Party
Hey Phoebe staff, families, and friends! The PTO is hosting the second annual The Party on Saturday, October 22nd. It’s not a fundraiser, it’s a chance for good people to hang out and build relationships. We’ve got Sac City Brews all to ourselves and Mike Illif’s band, The Why Nots, will be rocking the house again! We hope to see you there!

LCFF Forms
Families play a critical role in ensuring our Sac City Unified schools are properly funded. Although all students receive free meals regardless of income, the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) application still determines how much funding our district receives. You can help our school community by completing the LCFF application by October 31, 2022. It only takes a few minutes for you to help us protect critical funding for our students! Even if you know that you won’t qualify it is still imperative that you complete the application.
